**NHAI Extends International Invitation for GNSS-Based Electronic Toll Collection Deployment in India**
**New Delhi, 07th June 2024:** In a bid to furnish National Highway users with an unbroken, barrier-free tolling experience and bolster the efficiency and transparency of toll operations, the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), an entity endorsed by the NHAI, has announced a Global Expression of Interest (EOI). This initiative seeks avant-garde and proficient companies to conceptualize and actualize a GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection system across India.
The NHAI envisions integrating the GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system within the pre-existing FASTag framework, initially employing a hybrid model wherein both RFID-based and GNSS-based ETC will coexist. Specifically designated GNSS lanes at toll plazas will permit vehicles utilizing the GNSS-based ETC to transit unimpeded. With the proliferation of GNSS-based ETC, a complete transition to GNSS lanes for all toll plazas is anticipated.
To exploit the advanced satellite technology, the EOI’s objective is to pinpoint seasoned and adept companies capable of delivering a robust, scalable, and efficient Toll Charger Software. This software will underpin the implementation of the GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection system in India. The EOI encompasses a comprehensive implementation strategy and solicits feedback on the same. Interested parties are encouraged to convey their interest via email to tenders@ihmcl.com by 1500 hrs (IST) on 22nd July 2024.
The implementation of GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection in India is poised to facilitate the unimpeded movement of vehicles along the National Highways. It promises numerous advantages for highway users, including barrier-free, free-flow tolling for a seamless driving experience and distance-based tolling, whereby users will be charged solely for the distance traversed on a National Highway. Moreover, the GNSS-based ETC will enhance toll collection efficacy by curbing revenue leakages and mitigating toll evasion.
Ultimately, the GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection will augment the smoothness and seamlessness of journeys for commuters on National Highways.
